You know those giant clouds of smoke that seem to cover a vaper’s head entirely? That’s sub-ohm vaping.

It’s the hottest trend in the vape world. Using high-wattage batteries and custom mods, sub-ohm vaping flirts with danger to deliver warm heat and thick smoke.


But a note of caution — it’s not for everyone.

It’s a way of supercharging your vape experience, by using low resistance coils. (These coils are rated below 1.0 ohm — that’s why it’s called “sub”-ohm vaping)


Why does that matter?

By reducing the coil’s resistance, more electric current can pass through. That means a hotter coil that pumps out more vapor. That means more thick billows of smoke that cause other people to crane their heads and whip out their phone cameras.


Plus, if you’re into flavors — and who in the vaping world, isn’t? — the taste gets rich and bold.

Where did Sub Ohm Vaping come from?

Like many trends, sub-ohm vaping emerged out of a DIY community of vapers.

Before sub-ohm tanks became commercially available, vapers were making their sub-ohm coils out of whatever materials they could source over the internet. They built their own coils out of kanthal wire and made wicks out of silica and cotton. Using 18650 batteries, they maxed out power to heat their self-built coils.


Like many DIY things, it was hugely impressive and slightly dangerous.

But the trend got on. And vape companies caught up with the times. We began crafting our own line of regulated box mods and sub ohm tanks to cater to the vape market that likes to live on the edge . . . or at the very least, in the clouds.


Sub-Ohm? What’s that mean?

Most tank atomizers on the market have a range varying from 1.5 to 2.8 ohms. With sub-ohm vaping, thicker atomizer coils are using, reducing the coil’s resistance to under 1.0 ohm — hence the name “sub-ohm.”


Remember, the lower the resistance, the hotter the burn, the thicker the clouds.

How to get started sub-ohm vaping?

For starters, you need sub-ohm vape equipment. Duh.

But seriously, some aspiring sub-ohmers try to start with a traditional atomizer. It doesn’t work. It tastes horrible and will likely destroy your coil.


You need a sub-ohm tank that can handle the high temps. These specialized tanks allow more airflow so the coils can cool properly (don’t worry, it will still feel pleasantly warm on your lips) while producing a watermelon-sized cloud of vape.

What’s my equipment?

Sub-ohm vapers got three choices.

Beginners should start with a Sub Ohm tank. They come pre-made with disposable coils so there’s no fuss. And it’s accessible to people who don’t want to build or modify their own devices.


The next step up are RTAs (Rebuildable Tank Atomizers). This means you have to make your own coils but since there’s a pre-built tank, you don’t have to worry about dripping juice directly on to the coils.

For those looking for the hands-on, real thing experience, go with RDAs (Rebuildable Dripping Atomizers) aka Drippers.


These bad boys attach to mechanical or box mods. They are wicked with cotton and come with a deck where you can assemble coils. (Just get your coil wire, tightly wrap it around a screwdriver and slide the results on the deck.)

When you’re ready to vape, drip a little juice straight onto the coils, wick after a few puffs and enjoy your hard-burning, clouds-on-steroids creation.
